recently, i made some dumb decisions in the name of “love” and ended up hurting the person i genuinely love and want to grow with.
it forced me to realize that i didn’t understand love—or myself—as much as i thought i did. i have been hurt before, but that doesn’t mean i’m incapable of hurting someone else.
and hurt isn’t limited to cheating. dishonesty, secrecy, avoidance, and hiding things because you’re afraid of the consequences can also make someone feel unsafe.
fear may explain why i made certain choices, but it doesn’t excuse them. loving someone means caring about the effect my actions have on them, taking responsibility without becoming defensive, and doing the work to change.
i’m learning that love isn’t only saying “i choose you.” it’s becoming someone whose choices make those words feel true.
✦ still learning. still growing. still choosing honesty ✦
